A former governor of Imo state, Ikedi Ohakim, on Tuesday defected to All Progressives Congress, saying that those who will bury him as asked him to make the latest political move.
Speaking at his Burma retreat country home in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state, Ohakim who was the governor of the state between 2007 and 2011, said that he could not afford to go against the advice.
Ohakim said ” as they rightly observed, I have a unique orientation in participatory politics that emphasizes common interest as against personal interest.It was on record that in 1998, against the pull of tide, many people were surprised when I refused to line behind APP which was considered the party if the movers and shakers of the state then and joined the PDP what followed later was almost a political tsunami that consumed the then powerful APP in Imo state.
“This time around, I have refused to swing against the tide because my people, the ones that will bury me when I die, have asked me not to swing against the tide.
” To me, the moment the interest of the people is not factored in any political decision I make, nothing else makes meaning. That remains my staying power and driving force.
“Anyone consversant with my political trajectory would readily identify what defines my choice of political association. I particularly get enamored with any and every engagement that has a promise of deploying party, power and government to serve people conscientiously and with the fear of God.”
Ohakim said he joined the ruling party to help the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, deliver more dividends of democracy to the people of the state.
He recalled how Uzodinma supported home when he held sway as the governor of the state between 2007 and 2011.
The ex governor added” I find in governor Hope Uzodinma, a man who is determined to set enviable records that would change the lives and fortunes of the people and the state at end of the day.
The governor of the state said that Ohakim was a big asset to the APC.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, cosmos Iwu, Uzodinma, said that the people of Imo North Senatorial district would wax stronger in Uzodinma’s administration with Ohakim’s entrance into the ruling party.
He said ” your excellency, you are welcomed to the APC family where everybody is equally. You will enjoy all rights and privileges. In APC, there is no discrimination between old party members and new entrants.”
