With the recent heated clamour for Igbo presidency, a call which had already claimed the governor of Ebonyi State Dave Umahi, for a president from Igbo extraction, the activities of aides to the former Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, and former governor of Imo State, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha have caused many to ask the question, is Ihedioha in support or against the call for Igbo presidency come 2023?
A close aide to Ihedioha was seen posting a campaign picture on his Facebook page, in support of Ihedioha’s former boss in the National Assembly, and governor of Sokoto State Aminu Tambuwal, who is reportedly eyeing the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the 2023 General Elections.
Interestingly, Ihedioha’s voice have also been silent towards the calls for Igbo presidency, a call which seem to be championed by Igbo politicians of the APC extraction, such as Orji Uzor Kalu, Rochas Okorocha amongst others.
Observers are of the view, that if Tambuwal is to get the party’s presidential ticket for the 2023 elections, he would most likely pick an Igbo running mate, and Ihedidoha would fit that bill, being his very trusted friend and lieutenant, who protected him under the regime of Goodluck Jonathan, when he decamped to the APC, and still supported him in 2019 for the PDP ticket.
Many wonder, if Ihedioha is eyeing the vice presidential seat, what becomes of his governorship bid, and even the Philip Umeadi case which may be kicking Uzodinma out of office in Ihedioha’s favour?
With the APC still dragging its feet over Igbo presidency, and the North still undecided whether to leave the South to occupy Aso Rock, and with the West still trying to sneak in Tinubu from the back door, Ihedioha may be playing the most intelligent game for the Igbo presidency, by playing second fiddle to a man he can trust to hand over to a South Easterner after he steps down.
If Umeadi succeeds in removing Uzodinma, and Tambuwal wins the PDP ticket, it would not prevent Ihedioha from contesting alongside Tambuwal, and if they win, Ihedioha may either hand over to his deputy, unless the law calls for fresh elections wherein, with PDP in power, Imo State will still not be lost to APC.
The common Igbo man, have not show keen interest in the Igbo presidency project, probably because of the names that have been presenting themselves, like Okorocha who is inarguably the worst governor Imo State has ever had, and Orji. Ihedioha by his silent but sure support for Tambuwal presidency and by extension, Igbo Vice presidency, he may he doing the best for the actualization of Igbo presidency.
My humble opinion.
